What Are Sliders?
The name “sliders” refers to a small sandwich made with a bun that’s about 2 inches across. You’ll often see sliders made as mini hamburgers, but you can use any kind of filling you like. In restaurants, sliders are typically listed on the appetizer menu at restaurants but you could have a few and make them into a main meal.
Recipe Ingredients
Here’s a quick rundown of what you’ll need to make these kings hawaiian sliders. Scroll down to the printable recipe card at the end of this post for the exact ingredient amounts.
- Shredded chicken – Use store-bought rotisserie chicken to make these sliders easily and quickly. Or use your own prepared chicken.
- Buffalo sauce – Buffalo sauce is made with a mixture of hot sauce, butter, vinegar, and Worcestershire sauce for smooth, intense flavor. Just use your favorite brand.
- Ranch dressing – Use bottled ranch dressing for ease and speed. Or make a batch of homemade ranch dressing!
- Cajun seasoning – Cajun seasoning is typically made of black pepper, white pepper, cayenne pepper, onion powder, garlic powder, and paprika. It’s available in most grocery stores.
- Salt & pepper – For additional seasoning, if needed.
- Mozzarella cheese – This adds gooey, stretchy-cheese goodness. I use shredded cheese, but you could also use slices.
- Cheddar cheese – This cheese offers a more contrasting flavor. You can use mild, medium, or sharp, whatever you like.
- Kings Hawaiian Rolls – These buns are small, soft, and sweet-flavored, perfect for sliders. Homemade Rhodes rolls would also be delicious!
- Butter – I use unsalted, but you can use salted if you like.
- Italian seasoning – If you don’t have Italian seasoning on hand use a mix of dried basil, oregano, parsley, and rosemary.
- Garlic powder – This adds another layer of delicious flavor!
How to Make Buffalo Chicken Sliders
Follow along with the photos and instructions below to help you make these sliders:
- Make the chicken mixture. In a large bowl, combine the shredded chicken with the buffalo sauce, ranch dressing, Cajun seasoning, and a bit of salt & pepper.
- Prep the rolls. Slice the rolls in half horizontally, with all the rolls still intact, and place the bottoms in a baking dish.
- Add the chicken. Spoon the seasoned chicken mixture evenly onto the rolls.
- Top with cheese. Sprinkle the shredded mozzarella and cheddar over the top of the chicken.
- Add the top halves of the rolls. Place the top halves of the dinner rolls over the cheese.
- Brush with seasoned butter. Combine the melted butter, Italian seasoning, and garlic powder – then brush it over the top of the dinner rolls.
- Bake covered. Cover the baking dish with foil and bake at 350°F for 10-15 minutes, or until thoroughly warmed.
- Bake uncovered. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 5-10 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and the tops of the rolls are golden brown.
Tips for Success
Here are a few best tips for success to make perfect buffalo chicken sliders:
- Make the filling in advance. You can make the chicken filling up to 3 days before you cook the sliders. Keep the filling in the fridge until you’re ready to assemble and cook the sliders.
- Use store-bought rotisserie chicken. You can bake chicken breasts on your own, or make your life easy and buy a rotisserie chicken.
- Use any rolls. Kings Hawaiian rolls are so nice in this recipe because they bring a hint of sweetness. But you could absolutely use any rolls you prefer.
What Goes With Buffalo Chicken Sliders?
Buffalo chicken sliders are great on an appetizer buffet – perfection on game day. You could also serve them for lunch or dinner with some extras. Here are a few of my favorite dishes to serve with this sliders recipe:
- As an appetizer. I have so many great appetizer recipes to choose from, including grilled mini sweet peppers with goat cheese, mini loaded baked potato bites, and Italian stuffed jalapenos.
- Add a fresh salad. My arugula beet salad and winter apple salad are loaded with fresh goodness. Or try my raw broccoli salad recipe.
- Top with pickles! Ahhhh, my favorite. Pickles! Try my mom’s refrigerator sweet pickles – or dill pickles, bread & butter pickles, or sweet & spicy pickles. There’s also pickled red onions (always a win!!) and pickled jalapenos!
- A selection of cocktails. You can serve buffalo chicken sliders during cocktail hour. Try them with a classic Manhattan, a bourbon margarita, or browse my full cocktails collection and non-alcoholic drinks for more ideas.
How to Store and Reheat Extras
Here’s the easiest way to store and reheat any leftover buffalo chicken sliders:
- Fridge – Store any leftover sliders in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days. You can also store the filling separately in an airtight container or Ziploc bag in the fridge for up to 3 days. Then spoon it onto fresh rolls and proceed with the recipe.
- Freezer – The slider filling can be mixed up and placed in an airtight container or freezer-safe bag and stored in the freezer for up to 3 months. Defrost the filling in the fridge overnight before continuing with the recipe.
- Reheat – Whole sliders can be reheated in the oven on a baking sheet on low heat until the meat is heated through, the cheese has melted, and the rolls are slightly crisp. Or simply microwave in 10-15 minute increments until warmed.
