I’ll be totally honest here…when I order an Asian-inspired salad at a restaurant, it’s not the fresh veggies or the sweet-tangy dressing that captivates me most. It’s the light and crispy Wonton Chips on top! Lucky for me – and for you – they are super simple to make at home. We enjoy them over the top of salads and my ever-popular Egg Roll in a Bowl, or simply dip them into sweet & sour sauce as an appetizer or side. Yummers!

Why This Wonton Chip Recipe Is the ONE

Here’s why my family likes to make these homemade wonton chips:

  • Three simple ingredients. I love a recipe that doesn’t add a lot to my shopping list. Just pick up some wonton wrappers, then you only need oil and salt — I’m sure you already have those on hand!
  • Fried for that perfect texture. Deep frying makes all the difference in this recipe. A quick dip in hot oil gives these wonton chips a perfectly light and crispy texture.
  • Ready in minutes. Once the oil heats up, it takes just a minute or two to cook a batch of chips. Sprinkle them with salt and they’re ready to devour!

What You’ll Need

As promised, the ingredient list is short and sweet! Scroll to the printable recipe card at the bottom of the post for exact ingredient amounts.

  • Wonton wrappers – Find these in the refrigerated section of the grocery store – sometimes in the produce section and sometimes with vegetarian and vegan foods like tofu and faux meats.
  • Vegetable oil – Or another high smoke point oil that you like to use for frying, like peanut oil.
  • Salt – Use a course salt or a flaky salt that you like. This adds not only a little bit of salty flavor, but also a nice little touch of texture.

  • Heat the oil. Heat 2″ of oil in a deep, heavy-bottomed pot until it reaches 360°F. Use a kitchen thermometer to keep track of the temperature.
  • Prep the wontons. Cut the wrappers into wide strips. Keep them covered with a towel so they don’t dry out while the oil heats.
  • Fry. Carefully add a handful of wonton strips to the hot oil, stirring to separate them. Cook for 1-2 minutes, until the chips are just turning golden brown.
  • Remove and season. Use a spider strainer or large slotted spoon to transfer the chips to a paper towel-lined baking sheet. Sprinkle with salt and repeat with the remaining wonton wrappers.

Tips + a Variation

Frying wonton chips is an easy gig. Here are my top tips for perfect chips:

  • Monitor the oil temperature closely. A kitchen thermometer is a necessity here — they’re inexpensive and make recipes like this much easier. You’ll want to keep the oil at a steady 360°F to achieve that perfect crispiness. If the oil gets too hot, the wonton chips will burn; if it’s too cool, they’ll absorb too much oil and become greasy and chewy. Don’t be surprised if you have to adjust the heat on the stove throughout the process to keep it at 360ºF.
  • Don’t overcrowd the pot. Frying in small batches allows the chips to cook evenly, keeps them from sticking to each other, and keeps the oil’s temperature from dropping dramatically when you add the wonton wrappers.
  • Drain the excess oil. Placing the fried chips on a paper towel-lined baking sheet helps absorb any residual oil, keeping them light and crunchy, and not greasy.
  • Make them sweet. Mix sugar and cinnamon and toss the just-fried chips in them. Kinda like fresh, hot mini donuts! Then dip the cinnamon wonton chips in Fruit Dip, if you like!

Serving Suggestions

Our family likes to dip wonton chips in sweet & sour sauce — simple and tasty. If you’d like, you can cut the chips a little bit larger and serve them with a more substantial dip like Shrimp & Crab Dip or Cranberry Jalapeno Dip.

They’re also great on salads like this Chinese Chicken Salad, or even added to soup recipes, instead of crackers. How about Coconut Curry Chicken Soup or Thai Chicken Soup?!

How to Store

Allow the wonton chips to cool completely before storing them. Transfer them to an airtight container or a resealable plastic bag and store them in a cool, dry place for up to a week.

Ingredients

  • 1 package (12 ounces) wonton wrappers
  • vegetable oil, for frying
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt

Instructions

  • Pour oil into a deep, heavy-bottomed pot or Dutch oven to about 2" deep, and heat over medium heat to 360°F. Clip a kitchen thermometer to the side of the pot to monitor the temperature.
  • Stack 4-5 wonton wrappers on top of each other. Then cut the wrappers into ¾" wide strips. Cover wontons with a towel while oil continues to heat up.
  • When oil is ready, carefully add a handful of wonton strips and stir gently with a spider strainer or large slotted spoon to separate. Take care to not overcrowd the pot. Cook for 1-2 minutes, or until the strips are a light golden brown. Note that the strips will darken a bit more after you remove them from the pot.
  • Use a spider strainer to remove the fried strips from the oil and place them on a paper towel-lined baking sheet. Sprinkle with salt to taste. Repeat with the remaining wonton wrapper strips.
  • Serve as a snack with sweet & sour sauce for dipping, with salads and soups, or with our favorite egg roll in a bowl!
