Why I Say This is the Best Fruit Dip
This fruit dip is a family favorite recipe that I’ve enjoyed for as long as I can remember…that’d be back in the 70’s, folks! Here’s why I think it’s the best fruit dip recipe out there:
- 2 ingredients. That’s right, only two ingredients: cream cheese and marshmallow creme. (If you want to infuse it with other flavors, see the Variations section later in this post.)
- Quick & easy. Just blend until smooth and creamy – ready in 5 minutes!
- Crazy fun flavor & texture. Everyone loves this dip’s tangy cream cheese + sweet marshmallow flavor. Plus, its texture is delightfully creamy and fluffy – so fun!
- Versatile. Serve fruit dip with appetizers, as a side dish, or as a simple dessert. This recipe adapts to any gathering.
- Make-ahead. Make this in advance and store it in the fridge. It’s a great recipe for entertaining, potlucks, and picnics!
Ingredient Notes
This recipe’s ingredients list is super short and simple. Scroll down to the printable recipe card at the end of this post for exact ingredient amounts.
- Cream cheese – Use full-fat cream cheese for the richest, best flavor, and let it soften to room temperature until it is VERY soft.
- Marshmallow creme – Jet-Puffed brand marshmallow creme (or you might call it marshmallow fluff?) is a popular name brand, but store brands work just fine.
How to Make Fruit Dip with Cream Cheese
If you have 5 minutes, you can make this fruit dip!
- Blend. Place the softened cream cheese and marshmallow creme in a medium bowl and blend with an electric mixer until smooth. If you have great spatula skills, you don’t even need a mixer. 😉
Tips for Success
A few simple tips for this super simple dip:
- Soften the cream cheese – This is my #1 tip. The goal here is to have a super smooth and creamy-fluffy dip. And this is only accomplished when the cream cheese is VERY soft.
- If the dip is lumpy – If your dip is still slightly lumpy, even after using softened cream cheese, let the dip rest at room temperature for 20-30 minutes. Then beat it again with an electric mixer. Increasing the mixer speed can also help to break up lumps and give a fluffier texture.
Variations
I’ve enjoyed many variations of this simple fruit dip over the years. Here are some ways you can change it up:
- Add warm spice. My mom often sprinkles cinnamon into this dip.
- Add flavor extract. There are many flavor extracts available these days. Vanilla and almond are popular choices for this dip, but feel free to experiment with others.
- Stir in fresh fruit juice and/or zest. This dip is delicious with 1-2 tablespoons of fresh orange, lemon, or lime juice mixed in. You can also mix in some zest.
- Stir in fruit juice concentrate. When I was young, Mom would make pitchers of OJ using cans of frozen orange juice concentrate. Add 2 tablespoons of thawed concentrate to this dip to give it a pop of fun flavor. You could also use other flavors of frozen concentrate, such as pineapple, lemonade, limeade, etc.
- Maraschino cherry! This is a top favorite variation for me. You can add a little maraschino cherry juice to the dip for color and flavor, and even fold some finely chopped maraschino cherries into the dip.
- Try another cream cheese. To add even more flavor to your fruit dip, make it with strawberry or blueberry flavored cream cheese in place of plain cream cheese.
Ways to Serve Fruit Dip
Serve this cream cheese fruit dip cold or at room temperature – any time, any place. It’s great for baby and bridal showers, graduation parties, summer BBQs, and holidays. There’s no wrong time to serve it!
Here are some of our favorite dunkers:
- Fresh fruit: I especially like strawberries and grapes with this dip. Other great options include pineapple, kiwi, banana, blueberries, blackberries, apples, mango, cantaloupe, and honeydew.
- Cookies & crackers. Chocolate chip shortbread cookies are fantastic with this dip. Store-bought graham crackers, vanilla wafers, Oreos, and shortbread cookies are also good.
Can I Make It In Advance?
This cream cheese dip for fruit keeps very well, so go ahead and make it ahead of time. Just transfer the dip to an airtight container and store it in the fridge for up to 5 days. Serve it cold, straight from the fridge. Or let it soften a bit by letting it sit out on the counter for at least 15 minutes – this also makes it easier to scoop up.
