Perfect Hard Boiled Eggs
I’m a huge fan of hard boiled eggs; I have some in the fridge most of the time. And while I use them in many different recipes, I most often find myself just eating the eggs with a few seasonings for breakfast, a light lunch, or a post-workout snack. They’re packed with nutrients and high in protein, which fuels my work, play, and exercise!
This recipe for Air Fryer Hard Boiled Eggs has been my BFF for quite some time now. The process is super easy, with very little time involved and minimal clean-up. A total win!
I love that the eggs can be hard boiled or soft boiled, simply by adjusting the amount of time they’re in the air fryer. They come out perfectly cooked. Just dunk them in an ice bath to stop the cooking, and peel. Hallelujah! They peel super easy, too!
How to Make Air Fryer Hard Boiled Eggs
There are just 3 easy steps to making these hard (or soft) boiled eggs.
- Preheat. Preheat your air fryer to 270° F. Prepare an ice bath while the air fryer heats up.
- Air fry the eggs. Add the eggs to the fryer basket in a single layer. Cook to your desired doneness (see below for times). This is the air fryer that we use (affiliate link) – the basket fits 12 eggs perfectly!
- Add to the ice bath. Once cooked, transfer the eggs to the ice bath to stop further cooking. This also makes them easier to peel.
What’s an ice bath? An ice bath is simply a bowl filled with ice and cold water. When you submerge the eggs in the ice cold water, the cold temperature quickly stops the cooking process. This gives you better control over the desired doneness of your eggs.
How long to boil eggs? The photo above shows eggs at different stages of cook time, from soft boiled on the left to hard boiled on the right.
Soft boiled eggs: 10 to 11 minutes. The whites are set, but soft. And the yolks are bright and golden, very moist, and somewhat jammy.
Medium hard boiled eggs: 13 to 14 minutes. The whites are set, a medium firmness. And the yolks are firm but still moist, a medium gold color, with a bit of a jammy center. These are my favorite!
Hard boiled eggs: 16 to 17 minutes. The whites are very firm. And the yolks are very firm, with a light yellow color and dry texture.
Cook Time Variables
Several factors can influence air frying cooking times. Use the stated timeframes above as a reference, but do expect that you’ll need to experiment a bit to find the ideal cook time for your perfect egg doneness. Here are a few things that can make a difference in hard boiled egg cook time:
- Egg size. We always use large eggs, so timing in this recipe reflects that.
- Quantity of eggs. I always cook a dozen eggs at a time, in a single uncrowded layer. If you cook more or less eggs, that will definitely make a difference.
- Desired doneness. Do you want hard boiled eggs or soft boiled eggs? Or somewhere in between?!
- Air fryer model. Each air fryer is different, with varying sizes, functions, and power ratings. This will make a difference, too.
My Egg Shells Have Spots On Them….What Do I Do?
It’s possible that your egg shells may have a few small brown spots on them after cooking in the air fryer. Don’t worry, it’s perfectly ok!
This is just from the hot air circulating so quickly – if your air fryer isn’t completely clean, tiny particles will fly around and stick to the eggs. But the ice water bath washes the spots right off. This will have no effect on the taste or quality of the egg.
What Is The Best Way To Peel Eggs?
Start at the bottom/fat part of the egg, because that’s usually where an air bubble forms. Tap the bottom of the egg on the counter to crack the shell. Then start to peel away the shell, getting under the thin membrane between the shell and the white, for the easiest shell removal.
There are so, so many ways to enjoy a hard or soft boiled egg. Here are a few of my personal favorites:
- sprinkle some Everything But The Bagel Seasoning (affiliate link) over the top
- add a little zingy Tajin (affiliate link)
- drizzle a bit of Sriracha mayo (affiliate link) over the top and sprinkle with black pepper
- serve with an arugula salad dressed with herby lemon vinaigrette and a side of quick pickled beets or refrigerator sweet pickles – YUM!!!
- slice and place on top of avocado toast
- in egg salad
- in dill pickle potato salad
- as deviled eggs
How to Store
- How to store hard boiled eggs. Store unpeeled hard boiled eggs in any container. If they’ve been peeled, put them in a sealed container with a damp paper towel over the top. Peeled or not peeled, store in the refrigerator for up to 7 days, per the USDA.
- How to store soft boiled eggs. Soft boiled eggs should be stored for just 2 days, in a sealed container. When making “very soft” soft boiled eggs, it’s best to make these “to order”, on the day you’ll be eating them – they’re wonderful warm!

- Add eggs to the fryer basket and cook to your desired hardness: about 10 to 11 minutes for soft-boiled eggs, and up to 16 to 17 minutes for hard boiled eggs. I usually set the timer for 13 to 14 minutes, to get eggs that are mostly hard, with a touch of a golden jammy center. Again, time may vary with the different variables listed above.
- Remove eggs from the air fryer basket and set them in the ice bath for 10 minutes. Peel when cool enough to handle. Enjoy!
