This refreshing Moscow Mule recipe is a summertime favorite and it’s so easy to make at home. The spicy-sweet flavor of bubbly ginger beer combines with the coolness of fresh mint and tart lime juice – truly magical on a hot day!

This time of year, when my herb garden is an explosion of fresh mint, is when we’re making Moscow Mules on repeat. They’re fresh and REfreshing – I just adore a good zingy ginger beer drink! Other fresh mint drink favorites include Classic Mojitos, Minnesota’s signature Bootleg Cocktail, and the loveliest Italian Hugo Spritz cocktails!
Why Moscow Mules Are on Frequent Rotation in My Home
Here’s why these Moscow mules are one of our favorite homemade cocktails.
- Cool and refreshing. With a light effervescence, plus fresh lime and mint, Moscow mules are one of the most refreshing cocktails you can enjoy in the summertime.
- No fancy equipment needed. Moscow mules are stirred, not shaken, which means you don’t need a cocktail shaker to make it. And while you can use copper mugs for authenticity (and extra chill), you don’t need them.
- Easy to customize. Put your own spin on this Moscow mule recipe to make it a little less classic and a little more creative. I share some ideas below, and I absolutely welcome you to experiment as you like!
What You’ll Need

- Vodka – Use unflavored vodka, one that you already like to drink. There’s no need to use an expensive vodka; I aim for a middle-of-the-road priced vodka that is smooth. I’ll also be sharing with you very soon how to make a Moscow mule without any alcohol, a refreshing and equally delicious NA mule!
- Lime juice – Use only freshly squeezed lime, for the freshest, liveliest flavor.
- Ginger beer – Ginger beer adds a bit of warm spicy bite, plus bubbles. Fevertree brand is a great ginger beer for this drink – although I love to pick up extra spicy ginger beers whenever I can! Keep in mind ginger beer and ginger ale are not the same! Ginger ale doesn’t pack much punch — it’s not warm and spicy like a good ginger beer.
- Garnishes – Lime wheels and a sprig of mint, if you’d like.
How to Make a Classic Moscow Mule
Making Moscow mules is a cinch! Here’s what you’ll need to do.
- Combine vodka and lime juice. Stir the two together in a copper mug or a highball glass. Add ice.
- Make it fizzy. Pour in the ginger beer.
- Add garnishes. Add fresh lime and a sprig of mint, then serve.
Tips & Variations
I’ve got a tip for you, plus some variation ideas for Moscow mules:
- Use copper mugs if you have them. You don’t have to run out and buy them if you don’t have them on hand, but if you really like Moscow mules, they might be worth purchasing. They help keep a Moscow mule super chilled, for a longer time – which is great for hot summertime temps.
- Make it more minty. A classic Moscow mule has mint for garnish, lending a little minty essence, but it’s not actually muddled into the cocktail. But you can muddle the mint with the lime juice a bit to release more mint flavor into the drink (we LOVE to do this!).
- Use another alcohol. Make this cocktail a Dark & Stormy by using dark rum instead of vodka or make it a Kentucky Mule by using bourbon.
- Add some fruitiness. Add 2 ounces of fruit juice — pineapple juice, pomegranate juice, or cranberry juice are all delicious!
- Make it a bit sweeter. Add ½ ounce (or to taste) simple syrup. You could also use honey, maple syrup, or agave syrup.
Make It for a Crowd
Moscow mules are easy to make for a party! Here’s what to do:
- Scale up the vodka and lime juice ingredients for as many drinks as you’ll need, and mix together in a pitcher or jar. Refrigerate until your guests arrive.
- Give the vodka/lime juice mixture a stir to incorporate, then pour 3 ounces into individual glasses or copper mugs filled with ice.
- Top individual glasses with 4 ounces of ginger beer.
- Garnish and hand to your guests!
