Squeeze some of the season’s best citrus into your weekend brunch with this gorgeous Blood Orange Mimosa!

In the middle of winter, in the middle of Minnesota, we’re all looking for a little color and brightness. I find that having bright, joyful flavors on hand helps get us through to springtime. Blood oranges and cara cara oranges are an easy win.

This easy mimosa recipe features freshly squeezed blood oranges and a splash of St Germain, topped off with some bubbly. It’s a brunching cocktail that’s stunning in both color and flavor.

Until spring arrives, this blood orange cocktail is THE brunch cocktail!

Blood Oranges vs Regular Oranges

What makes a blood orange different from a regular orange?

The biggest difference is the color. The inside is a dazzling crimson red, which is what gives the citrus fruit its name.

Blood oranges also have a unique flavor and aroma. They’re sweet, with a bit of tangy tartness – almost like they have some grapefruit and fresh berries infused in them. And the aroma is a little berry-like also.

What You’ll Need

This easy mimosa recipe is made with just 3 ingredients. See the recipe card below for measurements.

  • Blood orange juice – Freshly squeezed is key to the best bright, citrusy mimosa.
  • St Germain – St Germain is a French liqueur made from elderflowers. It’s light and floral with citrus undertones, absolutely lovely.
  • Sparkling wine – You can use prosecco or Champagne, or your favorite sparkling white wine.

How to Make A Blood Orange Mimosa

One of the reasons I like this citrus mimosa is because it’s just so quick and easy to prepare.

  • Add St Germain & blood orange juice. Add the St Germain and freshly squeeze blood orange juice to a flute-style glass.
  • Add the sparkling wine. Top off the drink with Champagne, prosecco, or your preferred sparkling wine.
  • Garnish. If desired, garnish with a slice of blood orange.

Tips & Variations

While these blood orange mimosas are super easy to make, here are a few things to keep in mind.

  • Juice the oranges ahead of time. You can squeeze the blood oranges in advance and keep the juice in a covered pitcher in the fridge until you’re ready to serve the mimosas.
  • Chill the Champagne ahead of time. You definitely want to chill the bubbly ahead of time, since you won’t be serving this over ice.
  • Pour the sparkling wine slowly. As you pour the sparkling wine into the glass, be sure to pour slowly as it will bubble up, and can overflow.
  • What if I don’t have blood oranges? If you don’t have or can’t find blood oranges, you can also make this orange mimosa with cara cara oranges instead. Cara cara juice has a dark pink coloring and slightly sweeter flavor than blood oranges.

Can I Turn This Into A Pitcher Cocktail?

Mimosas are great to turn into a pitcher cocktail for a crowd. Just prepare the blood orange juice in advance and pour it into a pitcher with St. Germain, multiplying the amounts by the number of drinks you want, and keep it refrigerated until serving.

I like to keep the sparkling wine chilled in a bucket of ice. Then pour the juice mixture into the glasses and top the glasses off with the sparkling wine.
