I blame New York City. And Lindsay, obsessed. They sucked me in with their beguiling passion fruit ways, and now I shall never pass up that tropical fruit again. I’m in love!
Upon my return from delicious NYC, I was left lonely for the flavor of passion fruit. This Passion Fruit and Berries Sparkler is a non-alcoholic version of a cocktail I enjoyed one evening in the big city. My rendition is ultra simple to make, with just four ingredients. It’s a fun and sparkly way to start off a weekend meal, and the kids are welcome to imbibe.
A few weeks ago, I flew to New York City to meet up with a few blogging friends. The photo above was taken in Central Park – left to right: Joanne, myself, Lindsay, and Julie. Joanne was our very lovely hostess, opening up her apartment, just a few blocks from Times Square and Central Park, for a few nights of sleepover and cooking together fun. Gina and Liz also joined up with us for a day of shopping and eats. The only things on our agenda the entire time were to walk the city, take in some awesome food, and simply spend some time together.
When naming New York City chefs, it would be remiss to not include Daniel Boulud. So I was ultra excited when Joanne said it was NYC Restaurant Week and that we could eat a three course lunch at Michelin-starred Café Boulud, on the Upper East Side, for just $25. I was SO in!
It was at Café Boulud where I was introduced to the insane goodness of passion fruit. I found out that Lindsay has some kind of unavoidable magnetism toward this fruit, and that Joanne was also a big fan. Both promised to let me try their passion fruit semifreddo (photo: above, upper left) if they could have some of my buttermilk panna cotta with blueberries. And that is where I was sucked in. The rest of the trip found me seeking out that same bright passion fruit flavor from every menu after that, right on Lindsay’s heels.
After lunch, it didn’t take long to reach Times Square. And then Broadway Bites, a seasonal culinary pop-up market with a variety of vendors and fabulous looking eats, near the Empire State Building. It was fun to share in some bubble tea (photo: above, lower left) at Hong Kong Street Cart with Julie, as she was the person who persuaded me to seek out my first while my family visited Seattle earlier this summer. In Seattle I tried a coconut flavored bubble tea. But this time it was passion fruit. Of course.
While I was waiting for my bubble tea, Lindsay disappeared. Soon she was back, all smiles, as she had found a couple more macarons to add to her already gorgeous stash just acquired at Ladurée. Her instagram post (above) says it best. Yes, passion fruit was involved.
Walking with bubble tea and macarons in hand, Joanne navigated us to lunch at one of her favorite spots, the Num Pang Sandwich Shop (yum!!). And then through Eataly and to Fish’s Eddy, both of which I had heard so much about. Eataly was some kind of Italian gastronomical wonder world. I must return there some day! And Fishs Eddy just made me smile. Full of whimsical-meets-edgy-meets-vintage kitchen wares, it completely sucked me in.
I couldn’t leave without a six-pack of these lovely Italian-style wine glasses. My carry-on bag from Minnesota was packed light, leaving space for just the perfect New York City memento. Done!
After spending a good amount of time oohing and aahing on the kitchen level of the ABC Carpet and Home store, we made our way back to Joanne’s to freshen up before heading out for a special evening meal at Buddakan. (Left to right: Joanne, Julie, Gina, Lindsay, and myself. Liz joined up with us at the restaurant.) It was a fun and hip place. We signed our stomachs up for their “small” tasting menu, which actually turned out to be quite large in size, enabling us to sample a good many of their menu offerings. It was delicious. And so was my last taste of passion fruit in New York City, in my “Charm” cocktail that consisted of passion fruit liqueur, apple, fresh berries, and Prosecco. Which sparked this simple little Passion Fruit and Berries Sparkler…
No alcohol this time. Only passion fruit juice, with Izze “Sparkling Apple” for a little bubble, plus blueberries from our picking and raspberries from our garden. Super simple.
It’s like a little trip back to NYC every time these glasses are pulled out. And when they’re filled with passion fruit juice…all the merrier.
Passion Fruit and Berries Sparkler
Yield: 3 to 4 small sparkling beverages
In a small to medium sized pitcher, combine passion fruit juice and Izze apple beverage. Pour into small glasses with crushed ice. Add a few blueberries and raspberries to each glass and serve.
For a version that includes alcohol, try swapping out the Izze apple beverage with a bit of fresh pressed apple cider, topped off by Prosecco.
