An Easy Dessert Recipe

Dessert may not be the first thing you think about throwing on the hot grill grates, but oh, after trying this Grilled Angel Food Cake, you’ll clearly understand why it should be!

This recipe takes slices of my light, fluffy homemade angel food cake and pops them on the grill for just 2-4 minutes (!). The end result is a whole new flavor and texture, simply delightful.

Many summers ago, our daughter’s friend stopped over on her bike, and joined us for dessert in the backyard. After one bite, Katie leaned back and said the grilled cake tasted just like roasted marshmallows. Which made us all grin, because she absolutely nailed that description.

Grilled angel food cake is delicately crispy on the outside, soft and puffy on the inside, with an awesome hint of campfire flavor. Perfection, I say!

Add some fluffy whipped cream and a spoonful of my easy 3-ingredient rhubarb sauce or 3-ingredient raspberry sauce, or simply a sprinkling of fresh berries – and the result is even more wonderful!

And if you don’t have a grill, don’t worry. You can easily make this in a grill pan (or even a regular skillet) on the stovetop. If you’re a fan of angel food cake, I’ll accept no excuses. Make this!!

Why Grill Angel Food Cake?

You may be thinking, what’s the point in grilling angel food cake? After all, angel food cake on its own is already pretty darn great!

But hear me out >>> Grilling the cake makes it EVEN BETTER!

In addition to the light vanilla-almond flavor, the outside caramelizes so fabulously on the grill grates, giving it a hint of smoky char. It’s like this cake was made to be grilled!

Plus there’s nothing that says “summer” more than foods from the grill, so this just fits in with the theme. It’s a great way to use leftover angel food cake, too!

Can I Use a Storebought Cake?

Yes, you can make grilled angel food cake with a storebought cake. While I love and highly recommend doing this with a homemade cake, if you’re in a pinch or just don’t feel like baking, you can absolutely grab an angel food cake at the store.

How to Make Grilled Angel Food Cake

This easy dessert recipe can hardly be called a “recipe”, but here’s how we make it!

Serving Suggestions

My favorite way to enjoy grilled angel food cake is topped with some freshly made rhubarb sauce. The sweet-tart flavor just pairs so well with the light flavor of the angel food cake, as well as the smoky charred taste.

Not a rhubarb fan? Raspberry sauce is equally delicious! You’ll love how easy it is to make this bright-flavored sauce!

And you can never, ever go wrong with a simple sprinkle of fresh berries on angel food cake.

Whatever topping you choose, don’t forget to add some freshly whipped cream. With angel food cake, there MUST be whipped cream! You can quote me on that. :)

How to Store

You definitely want to enjoy your grilled cake slices as soon as they come off the grill, for the full warm, crisped, and smoky effect.

But freshly baked angel food cake keeps well for a few days when stored properly at room temperature, so you can easily whip this up for dessert a few nights in a row. Just fire up the grill – it’s SO EASY to make!

Instructions

  • Slice angel food cake into individual pieces.
  • Heat grill to medium-high and scrub grill grates very, very clean. Place cake slices onto hot grates. Cook until gorgeously charred, and then flip with a tongs. This should only take 1-2 minutes per side. The sugars in the cake can caramelize and char faster than you think, so check on the cake periodically. Do not walk away from the grill! This can also be done using a grill pan on the stovetop.
  • Serve slices of warm grilled cake with freshly whipped cream, plus fresh rhubarb sauce, raspberry sauce, or fresh berries.
