Have you heard of this book?
one thousand gifts – by Ann Voskamp
During this week of our celebrated Thanksgiving, talk of gratitude, blessings, and grace are abundant. It has been almost one year since I dared myself to be more aware of my everyday, and often perceived as mundane, life. To audibly acknowledge the smallest of joys, hoping to teach our children to be thankful for more than the obvious food on the table and toys in their box.
This book pictured above - one thousand gifts – came out this past January. It was officially placed on my Wish List some time over the summer. And then, just a few weeks ago, my dear friend Angela handed me and a couple of girlfriends each a lovingly beribboned gift while we chatted over lunch. As I unwrapped what felt like a hardcover book, my heart skipped a beat as I saw two hands cradling a nest.
Yes, a copy of my very own. How did she know?!
This book came at the most perfect time. After doing my own thing my own way over the past year to coax daily gratitude, one thousand gifts has made me dive so much deeper. It’s beautifully written, with a flowing yet gritty poetry. I have been reading it slowly. On purpose. I do not want it to end.
If you would like to know more about this book, I encourage you to read Angela’s angle on it. Angela is a weekly writer for Woodbury Patch, a regular contributor to local Minnesota lifestyle magazines, and recently had her first short story published at Rose and Thorn Journal. Her family’s tradition of making lefse also graced the pages of this here blog last December.
Angela’s a speed demon of a reader who can throw a book over her shoulder before I can get past “In the beginning…”. Although I still have two chapters to go on one thousand gifts, I’ve been through enough books with her to know that I admire and respect her perception of what’s been read. I wouldn’t recommend her review otherwise. We’re on the exact same page there.
If you’d like to follow Angela, you can find her on facebook and twitter. Be sure to let her know that one very blessed friend of hers sent you.

Now for those turkey leftovers!
I came up with 11 delicious ways to gobble up that leftover bird later this week.
My starting goal was a nice and even 10 recipes.
But I just couldn’t cut out any of my findings.
So 11 it is.
Enjoy!

As if your recommendation to read this book wasn’t enough, I did click over and read Angela’s take on it and I believe it would certainly be money well spent by anyone. Thanks for talking about it and bringing it to my attention. I’m so behind in my book reading this year and hope to be able to get through many more next year, this one being included.
Thanks also for so many wonderful suggestions for leftover turkey. Have a wonderful Thanksgiving

Thanks for the tips for leftover turkey! I roasted a turkey this weekend to try and keep in with the wonderful thanksgiving tradition (even though I’m from and living in England). We’re always on the lookout for new recipies (and preferably cheap recipies as well!)

Great turkey ideas. I’ll have to give that chicken salad a try. I’m just now beginning to think we may not make it through all that turkey.
Love the post about fathers and daughters too! Glad I found your site.

Hello! My friend recommended your blog to me. I grew up in South Dakota for the first 13 years of my life and then North Dakota until I graduated! I love the Dakotas! Anyway, I was blessed to read Ann’s book in January right after it came out and it has totally changed my life! It’s fun to hear how it has blessed you too.
So nice to hear from you, Megan. I love that book!! It was fun to gift for Christmas this year.
My family gobbles up all the white turkey meat on Thanksgiving and I have found that turkey and smoked sausage gumbo is a delicious way to use that dark meat! I can’t wait to try some of these others! Thanks!
Ohhhhh…turkey and sausage gumbo sounds fantastic!!
Usually I make sandwiches for left over turkeys as well as omelet, now I have plenty of choices on what to do for leftover turkeys. I’m pretty sure my family would love these dishes.
